Adventure Time X Magic The Gathering Collab

Adventure Time is a Fantasy Cartoon airing in 2010. And Magic: The Gathering is a Trading card game created in 1993. Magic: The Gathering is known for doing lots of collabs with different video games and TV shows, so we felt that this was a natural collab. This group project consists of a set of cards we created, a BMO Kiosk that would hypothetically be put up in game stores upon launch, along with an update for the Magic: The Gathering mobile game. We also created loads of mockups for packaging and a potential launch event.

Group Mates and Contributions

Robert Robinson: Art Direction, Packaging

Nicholas Patterson: App, Art Direction

Austin Daubert: Branding, Research

Sophia Tello: Social Media

Mason Klein: Illustration, Card Creation

We started with the 5 W's: who, what, when, where, & why. We also did a survey for card direction. Throughout our research, we found out that most people really wanted a card for the Lich, who is the main antagonist in the show. I ended up producing the survey during this portion, which I made using Google Forms. Overall, we got a lot of data and a lot of insight from fans of the show and the card game.

Research

Cards

After the research phase, we got to the fun part, which was making the cards. We didn't illustrate the art for them, but Mace and their extensive knowledge of Magic: The Gathering wrote the stats and moves for each character. I became the chooser of characters based on the statistics we got from our survey. We created about 30 cards, which matched the number that Magic: The Gathering drops for their collaborations. Below are some examples of the cards, as we made a large quantity.

Kiosk

We started thinking about a theoretical launch party for the expansion, and one of the ideas we went with was a kiosk, but not just any kiosk; this one is in the shape of one of the most beloved characters in Adventure Time: BMO. BMO is a little robot that has the mind of a child, but also is very snarky and free-spirited. The Kiosk talks in Bmo's voice, and the static page is Bmo's face. The Kiosk offers a quiz for new players to choose which color combos would most suit them based on personality, and then offers them a pack of cards specific to their chosen combo. You can also buy cards from the Kiosk, but it's mainly there to provide a place for new players to start. The Kiosk ended up being my main contribution to the project, and I think it's awesome.

Merchandise

The Merchandise ended up being my favorite part of the project. I created multiple card packs and sleeves. Mace also worked hard on this portion where they created the booster boxes and some card packs. we also produced Mockups of people with the packs at the theoretical launch event. we also produced some posters for the launch event.

Socials

Sophia was the main one working on Socials, and she came up with a campaign on Instagram to promote the launch event for the collab. This part is pretty cut and dry. Social media seems to be the best place to advertise to gamers, and so we utilized it for our Project.

MTG Arena

Magic: The Gathering Arena is the mobile version of the Trading card game, focused on the game and less about the physical cards. Nick did a lot of work on this portion of the project, and he focused on providing a tutorial for new players using the character Jake the Dog as the narrator.
